How does arsenic speciation (arsenite and arsenate) in groundwater affect the performance of an aerated electrocoagulation reactor and human health risk?

Mehmet KOBYA

Arsenic (As) occurrence in water resources has become one of the most critical environmental problems worldwide. The detrimental health impacts on humans have been reported due to the consumption of As-contaminated groundwater resources. Consumption of As-containing water over the long term can cause arsenicosis and chronic effects on human health due to its toxicity. Several treatment processes are available for As removals such as coagulation, ion exchange, adsorption, and membrane technologies but they have various major drawbacks. In the present work, therefore, an aerated electrocoagulati ...Более

Optimisation of preparation of hazelnut shell activated carbon for adsorption of Cr (III)

Mehmet KOBYA

The aim of this study was the optimisation of the activated carbon (C) production process by dehydration-carbonisation using concentrated sulfuric acid (H2SO4) from hazelnut shells found locally and readily available agricultural waste and the adsorption of chromium (III) (Cr3) on the activated carbon produced by this method. An adsorption experiment was carried out at conditions of 25 degrees C and initial concentration of 30 mg chromium (III)/l. The optimum process conditions for ensuring maximum adsorption capacity were investigated by means of statistically designed experiments and steepes ...Более

Graphene-based ZnCr layered double hydroxide nanocomposites as bactericidal agents with high sonophotocatalytic performances for degradation of rifampicin

Mehmet KOBYA

Herein, ZnCr layered double hydroxide (ZnCr LDH), and its nanocomposites with GO and rGO were synthesized using the co-precipitation method. The samples were characterized using XRD, FT-IR, SEM, TEM, BET, and XPS techniques. The sonophotocatalytic activity of the ZnCr LDH, ZnCr LDH/GO, and ZnCr LDH/rGO was investigated via the degradation of rifampicin (RIF) in the ultrasonic bath under visible light irradiation. The synergy index of more than 1 determined for ZnCr LDH/rGO indicated the positive interaction of sonocatalysis and photocatalysis resulted by hybridizing the LDH nanosheets with rGO ...Более

Arsenic removal from groundwater using an aerated electrocoagulation reactor with 3D Al electrodes in the presence of anions

Mehmet KOBYA

Co-occurrence of arsenic and anions in groundwater causes a severe health problems and combine effects of these pollutants significantly affect performance of treatment process. Thus, this study has been conducted to examine the combine effects of anions on arsenic removal using aerated electrocoagulation (EC) reactor with 3D Al electrodes in groundwater. A 3-level, six factors Box-Behnken experimental design (BBD) was applied to investigate the individual and combine effect of anions and operating time: phosphate (x(1): 1-10 mg L-1), silica (x(2): 20-80 mg L-1), bicarbonate (x(3): 130-670 mg ...Более

A review on treatment of membrane concentrates generated from landfill leachate treatment processes

Mehmet KOBYA

Landfill leachate (LL) is highly toxic wastewater and comprises various pollutants such as organic compounds, biological organisms, xenobiotics, heavy metals, inorganic salts, and ammonia. The integration of conventional methods with membrane processes has become indispensable due to the enforcement of stricter regulations for the LL discharge. The integrated membrane technologies achieve a pollutant removal efficiency of higher than 95?ith a large volume of treated leachate and a low capital cost investment. However, the drawback of these processes is the production of a membrane concentrate ...Более

Toxicity of Zn-Fe Layered Double Hydroxide to Different Organisms in the Aquatic Environment

Mehmet KOBYA

The application of layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanomaterials as catalysts has attracted great interest due to their unique structural features. It also triggered the need to study their fate and behavior in the aquatic environment. In the present study, Zn-Fe nanolayered double hydroxides (Zn-Fe LDHs) were synthesized using a co-precipitation method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and nitrogen adsorption-desorption analyses. The toxicity of the home-made Zn-Fe LDHs catalyst was examined by emp ...Более

Dichromate and arsenate anion removal by PEI microgel, cryogel, and bulkgel

Nahit AKTAŞ

Among the various metal ions, chromate (Cr(VI)) and arsenate (As(V)) are the two most hazardous toxic ion species and are found in nature in the form of dichromate and arsenate anions. In this investigation, polyethyleneimine (PEI)-based hydrogels were prepared with microgel, cryogel, and bulkgel morphologies employing glycerol diglycidyl ether as a crosslinker. The prepared PEI-based hydrogels were used to remove dichromate and arsenate anions from aqueous media. PEI microgel, cryogel, and bulkgels weighing 50 mg of each adsorbed 84.7 /- 0.8, 76.5 /- 5.2, and 108.9 /- 2.4 mg.g(-1) of dichroma ...Более

Catalytic performance of boron-containing magnetic metal nanoparticles in methylene blue degradation reaction and mixture with other pollutants

Nahit AKTAŞ

The catalytic effects of metal nanoparticles (MNPs) synthesized in sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT) microemulsion system by using M(II) salts (M = Fe, Co, Ni) and NaBH4 reducing agent on methylene blue (MB) degradation reaction were investigated. It was determined that Co-MNPs gave the best catalytic activity among them. Influence of the reaction parameters e.g., reaction time, temperature, the size of catalyst and the MNP types on the catalytic performance were studied. It was found that 37 /- 6 nm Co-MNPs revealed the best catalytic activity in all studies. The best activation p ...Более

Polyaniline-coated charcoal ash: a novel high-capacity adsorbent for removal of thiocyanate ions from aqueous solutions

Mehmet KOBYA

Removal of thiocyanate (SCN-), which is widely used in many industrial processes is of concern due to this toxicity. In this work, the potential of polyaniline-coated charcoal ash (PANI-CCA) as a low-cost and efficient adsorbent was evaluated in order to remove thiocyanate ions from aqueous solution. Morphologies and chemical composition of the PANI-CCAhave been examined by using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRD). Batch experiments were performed to examine the effects of operating conditions such as pH (6.0-10.0), ash dosage (0-0.30 g/50 ml), initial dye c ...Более

Evaluation of textile wastewater treatment in sequential anaerobic moving bed bioreactor-aerobic membrane bioreactor

Mustafa DOLAZ

In this study, the treatability of real textile wastewater [dissolved organic carbon (DOC): 500 mg/L), color: 6383 Pt-Co, sulfate: 362 mg/L)] was investigated in sequential anaerobic moving bed bioreactor (AnMBBR) and aerobic membrane bioreactor (AeMBR). AnMBBR was filled with 40 % career material (Kaldnes K1). The effect of different hydraulic retention times (HRTs) (6-48 h) and powdered activated carbon (PAC) addition (1 g/L) was investigated for system optimization. Sequential AnMBBR- AeMBR was successfully operated for textile wastewater treatment corresponding to 92 %, and 90 % dissolved ...Более
