Tomato is one of the best-studied cultivated dicotyledonous plants in molecular studies. Mobile genetic elements constitute large parts of plant genomes. Retrotransposons are mobile genetic elements within the genome and constitute more than 60 of the tomato genome.Transposable elements (TE) or transposons are DNA sequences that can alter their position within a genome, cause mutations and change the genetic identity of the cells and genome size. We aimed to analyze potato specific-P-Tst-1, P-Tst-3 and P-Tst-6 retrotransposon movements in tomatoes at different developmental stages (mature seed ...Более
Simple sequence repeats (SSRs) defined as sequence repeat units between 1 and 6 bp occur abundantly in both coding and non-coding regions in eukaryotic genomes and these repeats can affect gene expression. In this study, ESTs (expressed sequence tags) of Betula pendula (silver birch) were analyzed for in silico mining of EST-SSRs, protein annotation, open reading frames (ORFs), designing primers, and identifying codon repetitions. In B. pendula, the frequency of ESTs containing SSRs was 7.8 % with an average of 1SSR/4. 78 kb of EST sequences. A total of 188 SSRs was identified by using MISA so ...Более
In this current work, Roman nettle (Urtica pilulifera L.), a traditional medicinal plant that is very common and widespread species throughout Asia, Europe, and Northern Africa, was used as a model plant to investigate changes in antimicrobial activity following the application of aluminum stress. U pilulifera seedlings were grown in growth-room conditions and 0, 100, and 200 M AlCl3 were applied to the plants together with Hoagland solution (20 ml) for two months. The antimicrobial activities were tested against nine strains of bacteria (Salmonella sp., Staphyllococcus aureus, Escherichia col ...Более
Aluminum (Al) is one of the most important stress factors that reduce plant productivity in acidic soils. Present work thereby analyzed Al-induced genomic alterations in Bryophyllum daigremontianum clones using RAPD and ISSR markers, and investigated responding changes in photosynthetic pigment (chlorophyll a, b, a/b, total chlorophyll and carotenoid) contents and total soluble protein amounts in plant leaves. The main reason for the use of bulbiferous spurs originated clone plants was to increase reliability and acceptability of RAPD and ISSR techniques in DNA fingerprinting. Raised 40 clone ...Более
Although stresses induce generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are highly reactive and toxic, and cause severe damage to cellular components; plants have very efficient enzymatic ROS-scavenging mechanisms. Despite the substantial knowledge produced about these enzymes, we still have limited knowledge regarding their expression patterns in relation to the stress type, duration and strength. Thus, taking advantage of microarray data, this work evaluated the abiotic stresses (salt, cold, heat and light) induced regulation of six antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catala ...Более
In Laboratory bioassays and Pot culture, we determined the effects of aqueous extracts of 7-allelopathic crops [Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.), Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), Rape (Brassica napus L.), Rye (Secale cereal L.), Barley (Hordeum vulgare L) and Oat (Avena saliva L)] on the seedling growth of weed Hypericum triquetrifolium. In first Lab. bioassay, barley and rape were found most phytotoxic to Hypericum seedlings growth. Then these two crops effects were further tested in pot experiments, with different residues rates (R1, R2, R3 for rape and B1, B2, B3 ...Более

Cirsium species have economic importance because of their botanical and medicinal properties. Thus, this study has aimed to investigate some heavy metal (Fe, Mn and Zn) and mineral nutrient (B, Ca, K, Mg and Na) status of narrow endemic Cirisum byzantinum. Plant and soil element concentrations were analyzed by using ICP-OES and the evaluation of plant-soil interactions for heavy metals and mineral nutrients were carried out by statistical methods. The measured element concentrations (in mg/kg) were in ranges of 5.936-19.044 for B, 1862.161-4811.168 for Ca, 12.610-38.474 or Fe, 3421.383-6881.88 ...Более
A set of 17 Turkish rice (Oryza sativa L.) varieties (TRVs) were characterized using inter simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers to study genetic diversity. Also, the sequences of trnL((UAA))-F-(GAA) intergenic spacer (IGS) regions were used to evaluate the phylogenetic relationships of TRVs. According to ISSR data, the observed number of alleles (Na), effective number of alleles (Ne), Nei
Physiological responses were investigated in two cotton cultivars grown at various concentrations of sodium chloride (NaCl) in order to determine the degree of the tolerance of the cultivars to salt stress and understand the physiological responses with respect to utilization of mineral nutrients. After germination of the seeds of cotton cultivars, they were transferred into standard pots with 210 g sterilized compost and watered with 30 ml Hoagland's solution containing different concentrations (0, 50, 100, 200, and 400 mM) of NaCl at two-day intervals for 3 months. Growth parameters were mea ...Более
Boron (B) is an essential plant micronutrient but studies regarding its transport are still limited to a few plants. This work identified two major B transport sequences in plants, NIP5;1 boric acid channel protein and BOR1 transporter. 80 BOR1 and 34 NIP5;1 homologs were identified in 18 different plant genomes. BOR1 homologs had a HCO3-transporter domain, 649-737 amino-acid residues with mainly basic nature, putative 8-11 transmembrane domains (TMDs) and 11-13 exons. NIP5;1 homologs had a MIP family domain, 294-311 amino-acid residues with basic nature, 5-6 putative TMDs and 3-5 exons. Tyros ...Более
The indiscriminate use of chemical pesticides alongside the expansion of large-scale industries globally can critically jeopardize marine ecology and the well-being of mankind. This is because the agricultural runoffs and industrial effluents eventually enter waterways before flowing into highly saline environments i.e., oceans. Herein, the study assessed two novel bacterial isolates,Bacillus subtilisstrain H1 andBacillus thuringiensisstrain H2 from the hypersaline Lake Tuz in Turkey to degrade recalcitrant haloalkanoic acids, haloacetates and chlorpyrifos, and consequently, identify their opt ...Более
