Comparison of the Machigin and CAL Methods for Extraction of Plant Available P in Soils

Nurzat TOTUBAYEVA

Fertilizer recommendations for phosphorus (P) are generally based on the soil content of plant available P and the amount of P exported by the harvested crop. In countries of the former Soviet Union (SU), a widespread method is the Machigin extraction. The relationships between soil P contents extracted with this and other European methods are not well established. Here, we compare the Machigin soil P extraction method with the Calcium Ammonium Lactate P(CAL) procedure that is commonly used in Central Europe. Both methods were tested with 94 soil samples originating from Kyrgyzstan, Ukraine, a ...More

Urea Uptake and Release by Novel Macrogels from Dimethylacrylamide

Nahit AKTAŞ

A novel macrogels poly(N,N-Dimethylacrylamide) (p(DMAAm)) and its derivatives were synthesized from DMAAm for use in urea uptake and release. p(DMAAm) surface was modified by NaOH and HCl to obtain p(DMAAm)/NaOH and p(DMAAm)/HCl, which are negatively and positively charged, respectively. The dynamic swelling behaviors, water retention and pH sensitivities of the macrogels were studied. It was found that all macrogels exhibited the equilibrium swelling ratio (SR) in the range 1068-1451%. Swelling kinetics showed that the macrogels possessed Fickian diffusion behavior while the diffusion coeffic ...More

Mineral Nutrient Acquisition by Cotton Cultivars Grown under Salt Stress

İlhan DOĞAN

Physiological responses were investigated in two cotton cultivars grown at various concentrations of sodium chloride (NaCl) in order to determine the degree of the tolerance of the cultivars to salt stress and understand the physiological responses with respect to utilization of mineral nutrients. After germination of the seeds of cotton cultivars, they were transferred into standard pots with 210 g sterilized compost and watered with 30 ml Hoagland's solution containing different concentrations (0, 50, 100, 200, and 400 mM) of NaCl at two-day intervals for 3 months. Growth parameters were mea ...More
