Nomadic pastoralism and interaction zones (The case of pre-Soviet Kyrgyz pastoralism)

Baktıbek İSAKOV | Cıldız URMANBETOVA

This paper re-conceptualizes the four-seasonal cycling tradition of pre-Soviet Kyrgyz pastoralism, reconsidering the existing archival and oral materials. It argues that the summer quarters (zhailoo) in nomadic cycling were core contact zones for whole clan-based Kyrgyz community in pre-Soviet time whereas, the other winter, spring and autumn quarters remained in the margins. In addition, since all small and large nomadic groups from different regions were interacting in summer quarter, practicing the common language, ceremonies and traditions, this quarter also was preventing the emergence of ...More

The Kok-Tash underground mausoleum in north-eastern Kyrgyzstan: the first-ever identified Qara Khitai elite tomb?

Kubatbek TABALDİYEV | Künbolot AKMATOV

The Qara Khitai or Western Liao dynasty (1124-1218) is one of the most fascinating polities in medieval Eurasia, but also one of the least documented in terms of both literary sources and material culture. Founded by Khitan refugees who escaped from North China when the Jurchen Jin dynasty (1115-1234) vanquished the Khitan Liao dynasty (907-1125), the Qara Khitai soon established a multicultural empire in Central Asia, combining Khitan, Chinese, and Muslim elements. The Buddhist Qara Khitai ruled over their mostly Muslim population in rare harmony until the rise of Chinggis Khan (r. 1206-1227) ...More

The language phenomenon alone represents a field, but the use of language in different areas creates the styles of language use. As a result, the classification review has been evaluated and taking into account the changes, there is an attemption a new classification of press release style. Keyword: sty ...More

High-Altitude Agro-Pastoralism in the Kyrgyz Tien Shan: New Excavations of the Chap Farmstead (1065-825 cal b.c.)

Kubatbek TABALDİYEV

The highlands of Central Asia posed considerable challenges to early agriculturalists, yet the processes of human subsistence strategies there remain poorly understood. In this paper, we present results from the excavation of the Chap in Kyrgyzstan. The recovery of a rich macrobotanical assemblage consisting of several crop species and crop processing debris, together with skeletal remains of pastoral livestock, indicate a localized agro-pastoral complex at 2000 masl dating to 1065-825 cal b.c. The effect of geographical margins on cereal grain size variation: Case study for highlands of Kyrgyzstan

Kubatbek TABALDİYEV

Archaeobotanical research in prehistoric Central Asia and beyond has repeatedly reported highly compact wheat and barley varieties found along piedmont sites of the Inner Asian Mountain Corridor (IAMC). The morphotypical variation of wheat caryopses across Eurasia generated the Liu et al. (2016) publication pointing out a decrease in grain size relative to eastward dispersal into China; the decrease in wheat caryopses was explained as human selection of smaller grain sizes for better culinary properties. In this study we discuss the possible effect of geographical margin, mountains in partic ...More

Exploring Landscape Archaeology and UAV-Based Survey in the Kochkor Valley, Kyrgyzstan

Kubatbek TABALDİYEV

However, landscape archaeological approaches that might address socio-economic integrations have been limited by discontinuous, sometimes skewed datasets. Here, we present the results of UAV-based survey at Kok-Sai, an upland alluvial slope in the Kochkor Valley of north-central Kyrgyzstan, in which we identified more than 900 archaeological features in a 380 ha study a ...More
