How does arsenic speciation (arsenite and arsenate) in groundwater affect the performance of an aerated electrocoagulation reactor and human health risk?

Mehmet KOBYA

Arsenic (As) occurrence in water resources has become one of the most critical environmental problems worldwide. The detrimental health impacts on humans have been reported due to the consumption of As-contaminated groundwater resources. Consumption of As-containing water over the long term can cause arsenicosis and chronic effects on human health due to its toxicity. Several treatment processes are available for As removals such as coagulation, ion exchange, adsorption, and membrane technologies but they have various major drawbacks. In the present work, therefore, an aerated electrocoagulati ...More

MORPHOLOGY AND HISTOLOGY OF THE EURASIAN LYNX (Lynx lynx) PLANUM NASALE

Hasan Hüseyin ARI

This study reveals the macroscopic and microscopic structures of the Eurasian lynx planum nasale using materials from three dead females obtained from the Sivas Forestry Branch of Agriculture and Forestry Ministry of the Republic of Turkey. To accomplish the purpose, planum nasale was investigated using macroscopic, histological, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. The microscopic examination showed that the planum nasale consists of hairless, moist, glabrous skin and resembles a ship anchor with arm, palm, stock, and sickle parts. The planum nasale's surface is formed by epider ...More

Investigations on soil nematode diversity in three contrasting habitat types in Bolu, Turkey

Şenol YILDIZ

The study investigated nematode diversity in three contrasting habitat types around the Yenicaga Lake, Bolu Province, Turkey, in 2019 and 2020. The Shannon-Wiener index was used to evaluate nematode diversity in different taxonomic categories (order, family and genus level), trophic group and colonizer-persister (c-p) group in grassland, cropland and peatland in two locations, Hamzabey and Adakoy, in the Yenicaga Lake Reserve. The results revealed that there was statistically significant variation in the composition of nematode fauna between the study sites by the assessments of the higher tax ...More

Tailoring Cadmium Composition on Titanium Dioxide to Achieve Enhanced Photocatalytic Glucose Fuel Cell Anode Performance

Nahit AKTAŞ

In this study, titanium dioxide (TiO2)-supported Cd catalysts were prepared at 0.05-3 of Cd loading by employing the incipient wetness impregnation method. These catalysts were characterized via X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX), high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy and TEM-EDS mapping, inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry ( ICP-MS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), temperature-programmed oxidation (TPO), and temperature-programmed desorption (TPD). XR ...More

Graphene-based ZnCr layered double hydroxide nanocomposites as bactericidal agents with high sonophotocatalytic performances for degradation of rifampicin

Mehmet KOBYA

Herein, ZnCr layered double hydroxide (ZnCr LDH), and its nanocomposites with GO and rGO were synthesized using the co-precipitation method. The samples were characterized using XRD, FT-IR, SEM, TEM, BET, and XPS techniques. The sonophotocatalytic activity of the ZnCr LDH, ZnCr LDH/GO, and ZnCr LDH/rGO was investigated via the degradation of rifampicin (RIF) in the ultrasonic bath under visible light irradiation. The synergy index of more than 1 determined for ZnCr LDH/rGO indicated the positive interaction of sonocatalysis and photocatalysis resulted by hybridizing the LDH nanosheets with rGO ...More

Genetic diversity and population structure of apple germplasm from Eastern Black Sea region of Turkey by SSRs

Ahmet AYGÜN

Turkey has a diverse apple germplasm and Northeastern Anatolia had great contributions to domestication of the Malus genus. Despite quite high rainfall (900-2300 mm) and humidity (70-85?levels, several local apple cultivars have been successfully grown for centuries at the coastal zone of Eastern Black Sea region of Northeastern Anatolia without any pesticide applications. In this study, a set of 206 local genotypes, including 6 international cultivars as references was analyzed using 13 SSR primers with the aim of assessing the genetic diversity and population structure among the genotypes. B ...More

Synthesis of Smart Food Packaging from Poly (Gelatin-co-Dimethyl Acrylamide). Citric Acid-Red Apple peel Extract

Nahit AKTAŞ

A novel and smart hydrogel was synthesized from N, N dimethyl acrylamide (DMAAm), gelatin, and citric acid (CA) red apple peel extract (RApE) to be utilized as a multi-functional food packaging material. The p(Gelatin-co-DMAAm)/CA-RApE was prepared through a redox polymerization technique in film form in petri dishes. Mechanical and water resistance of the p(Gelatin-co-DMAAm)/CA-RApE was improved by the addition of citric acid and N, N, methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as cross linker. The characterization of p(Gelatin-co-DMAAm)/CA-RApE was carried out by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (F ...More

Synthesis and characterization of novel organo-hydrogel based agar, glycerol and peppermint oil as a natural drug carrier/release material

Nahit AKTAŞ

The very recent Covid-19 pandemic has made the need to understand biocompatible polymers as support material in drug delivery systems and controlled release clearer, especially for organo-hydrogels. This study aims to synthesize various new polymeric materials called gels, hydrogels, and organo-hydrogels according to the monomer used and to investigate their use as drug release systems. The agar-glycerol (AG) pair was used to synthesize the polymers, N, N, methylene bisacrylamide (MBA, m) and glutaraldehyde (GA, g) were used as cross-linkers and peppermint oil (PmO) was included to obtain the ...More

Arsenic removal from groundwater using an aerated electrocoagulation reactor with 3D Al electrodes in the presence of anions

Mehmet KOBYA

Co-occurrence of arsenic and anions in groundwater causes a severe health problems and combine effects of these pollutants significantly affect performance of treatment process. Thus, this study has been conducted to examine the combine effects of anions on arsenic removal using aerated electrocoagulation (EC) reactor with 3D Al electrodes in groundwater. A 3-level, six factors Box-Behnken experimental design (BBD) was applied to investigate the individual and combine effect of anions and operating time: phosphate (x(1): 1-10 mg L-1), silica (x(2): 20-80 mg L-1), bicarbonate (x(3): 130-670 mg ...More

Control of Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) in open field tomato crops using the mating disruption technique

Tair Esenalı Uulu

This study was conducted in Meram district of Konya province (Turkey) in 2018 and 2019 to evaluate the efficacy of mating disruption against the tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta in an open-field tomato growing area. Three pheromone-treated fields and three control fields were used to evaluate the effectiveness of mating disruption in both years. In pheromone-treated fields, mating disruption pheromone was applied once at a rate of 2500 g/ha with a caulking gun. In control fields, only pheromone traps were hung for monitoring and comparing the pest population. Male captures in monitoring pheromo ...More
