Effects of three aging methods on the Longissimus lumborum muscle from Holstein-Friesian steers

Ümit GÜRBÜZ

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of three aging processes (traditional dry aging, wet aging in vacuum shrink pack and dry aging in a highly moisture-permeable bag) in five aging times (0, 7, 14, 21, 28 days) for their effects on physical, chemical, microbial, histological, textural and sensory properties of beef Longissimus lumborum muscle from Holstein-Friesian steers. Longissimus lumborum muscles were aged dry (D), in a dry-aging bag (B) and a vacuum shrink pack (V) for 28 days at 0.5 degrees C +/- 0.5 with 80% humidity. An increase was observed in pH and TEARS values of ...More

Clinical and cardiologic assessment of Anatolian shepherd dogs with asymptomatic degenerative mitral valve disease

İsmail ŞEN

Degenerative mitral valve disease (DMVD) is the leading cause of cardiac disease and heart failure in the dog. Advanced age, breed and male gender are well-known risk factors for DMVD. The incidence of the disease in German Shepherds seems to be noteworthy. Early diagnosis of DMVD is related to the identification of a left apical systolic murmur, characteristic of MR in a dog. Dogs with DMVD had a low frequency of arrhythmias compared to other cardiac conditions. The goal of the study was (i) to evaluate the age and gender incidences of the asymptomatic Anatolian Shepherd Dogs (ASHs) with DMVD ...More

Risk Factors For, And Causes Of, Perinatal Calf Mortality And Implications For Calf Welfare

İsmail ŞEN | Abuzer TAŞ | Ayperi Aytmırza Kızı

The perinatal period is the most hazardous in the life of all animals. More than 60% of producers have reported that most of their calf mortality occurs at birth. Calf mortality represents economic losses to the dairy industry due to delayed genetic progress, fewer replacements available for voluntary culling of the lactating herd, and increased cost of replacement. The main causes of perinatal morbidity and mortality are, in descending order of importance, combined respiratory and metabolic acidosis, parturient trauma, hypoglobulinemia, congenital infections and deficiencies, and omphalophleb ...More
