Assessment of Cd-induced genotoxic damage in Urtica pilulifera L. using RAPD-PCR analysis

İlhan DOĞAN

Plants can be used as biological indicators in assessing the damage done by bioaccumulation of heavy metals and their negative impact on the environment. In the present research, Roman nettle (Urtica pilulifera L.) was employed as a bioindicator for cadmium (Cd) pollution. The comparisons between unexposed and exposed plant samples revealed inhibition of the root growth (∼25.96% and ∼45.92% after treatment with 100 and 200 µmol/L Cd concentrations, respectively), reduction in the total soluble protein quantities (∼53.92% and ∼66.29% after treatment with 100 and 200 µmol/L Cd concentrations, re ...More

Screening of damage induced by lead (Pb) in rye (Secale cereale L.) – a genetic and physiological approach

İlhan DOĞAN

The fields in which lead (Pb) finds application in the modern world have increased dramatically in recent years. As a consequence of this intensive utilization of Pb, its toxicity tends to pose more and more environmental problems. The aim of this study was to evaluate the genotoxic potential of Pb and to characterize some physiological parameters in Secale cereale under Pb stress. Plants were subjected to different exposure levels of Pb (0, 100, 200 and 400 µmol/L) for two weeks. At the end of the experimental period, the effects of Pb exposure on the photosynthetic pigments content (chloroph ...More

Carbonaceous Materials-12: a Novel Highly Sensitive Graphene Oxide-Based Carbon Electrode: Preparation, Characterization, and Heavy Metal Analysis in Food Samples

Ali Osman SOLAK

Graphene oxide (GO) was covalently attached to glassy carbon (GC) electrode (GC–O–GO) for fabricating nanosensors to determine trace Pb2+ and Cd2+ using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV). Surface characterization of the nanofilm-covered electrode was performed via electrochemical cyclic voltammetry (CV), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. Surface pKa of the GO covalent attached GC (GC–O–GO) was calculated via CV. Under optimal conditions, a linear response was found for Pb2+ and Cd2 ...More

Analysis of EST-SSRs in silver birch (Betula pendula Roth.)

İlhan DOĞAN

Simple sequence repeats (SSRs) defined as sequence repeat units between 1 and 6 bp occur abundantly in both coding and non-coding regions in eukaryotic genomes and these repeats can affect gene expression. In this study, ESTs (expressed sequence tags) of Betula pendula (silver birch) were analyzed for in silico mining of EST-SSRs, protein annotation, open reading frames (ORFs), designing primers, and identifying codon repetitions. In B. pendula, the frequency of ESTs containing SSRs was 7.8 % with an average of 1SSR/4. 78 kb of EST sequences. A total of 188 SSRs was identified by using MISA so ...More

Modified Dincer and Dost Method for Predicting the Mass Transfer Coefficients in Solids

Coşkan ILICALI

The analytical model developed by Dincer and Dost [3] for the estimation of diffusivities and mass transfer coefficients has been reviewed, and the equations used for the evaluation of the mass transfer coefficients have been corrected. The corrected equations have been used for the calculation of mass transfer coefficients from literature data. It was observed that the corrected diffusivities showed significant differences from the previously calculated values. The use of the modified equations in future drying calculations will lead to more realistic mass transfer coefficient values. - Keyw ...More

Outbreak of sheeppox in farmed sheep in Kyrgystan: Histological, eletron microscopical and molecular characterization

Nurbek ALDAYAROV | Zarima CUMAKANOVA | Askarbek TÜLÖBAEV

On a farm in the Kyrgyz Republic, several dead sheep were found without any history of illness. The sheep showed several ulcerations on lips and bare-skinned areas. At necropsy the lungs showed multiple firm nodules, which were defined as pox nodules histologically. In the rumen hyperkeratotic plaques were visible. With electron microscopy pox viral particles were detected and confirmed with qPCR as Capripoxviruses. Although all members of the Capripoxvirus genus are eradicated in western countries, this study should remind us of the classical lesions observed in poxvirus infections. Keywords: ...More
