A review: use of soilless culture techniques in ornamental plants

Atilla DURSUN

The use of soilless culture in the cultivation of ornamental plants is becoming widespread, especially in the production of cut flowers. The aim of this review is to present a brief summary of both standard and new findings obtained from using soilless culture techniques in ornamental plant cultivation, based on a detailed literature review. In the researches reached for this review, Calendula officinalis L., Matthiola incana L., Pelargonium zonale L., Petunia x hybrita L., Pinus pinea, Cupressus arizonica, C. sempervirens, Sternbergia lutea, Galanthus elwesii Hook, Lilium candidum, Limonium s ...More

Genetic diversity and population structure of apple germplasm from Eastern Black Sea region of Turkey by SSRs

Ahmet AYGÜN

Turkey has a diverse apple germplasm and Northeastern Anatolia had great contributions to domestication of the Malus genus. Despite quite high rainfall (900-2300 mm) and humidity (70-85?levels, several local apple cultivars have been successfully grown for centuries at the coastal zone of Eastern Black Sea region of Northeastern Anatolia without any pesticide applications. In this study, a set of 206 local genotypes, including 6 international cultivars as references was analyzed using 13 SSR primers with the aim of assessing the genetic diversity and population structure among the genotypes. Determination of AFM(1) Levels of Mare's Milk and Koumiss Produced in the Highlands of the Kyrgyz Republic

Fatih Ramazan İSTANBULLUGİL

Mare's milk and koumiss are two very important basic foodstuffs in central Asia. This study aimed to research the AFM(1) contamination in mare's milk and koumiss samples collected from local producers in the highlands in Naryn, Issyk-Kul, Bishkek and Talas regions of Kyrgyz Republic. For this purpose, 75 raw mare's milk and 75 koumiss samples collected in May, June and July 2017 were analyzed using the ELISA method. ARM was detected in 13.3% of the 75 raw mare's milk samples with levels ranging between 6.48 and 25.45 ng/L. Approximately 53.3% of the koumiss samples were found to contain AFM(1), ...More

Synthesis and Characterization of Hydroxypropyl Acorn Starch (HPAS) From Oak Acorn

Mustafa DOLAZ

The utilization of forest auxiliary products and their conversion into products with higher added value is important for the use of renewable resources. For this purpose, acorns belonging to the Q. coccifera species were collected in November, which is their ripening period, and dried and ground in the laboratory. Then, acorn starch (AS) was isolated from the sieved acorn flour. For 5 g of this isolated AS, hydroxypropyl acorn starch (HPAS) with the highest molar substitution (MS = 0.319) was synthesized by optimizing at 45 degrees C for 5 h with 30 g of propylene oxide and 1.88 g of NaOH. The ...More

Nematode Community-Based Soil Food Web Analysis of Ferralsol, Lithosol and Nitosol Soil Groups in Ghana, Kenya and Malawi Reveals Distinct Soil Health Degradations

Şenol YILDIZ

Determining if the vast soil health degradations across the seven major soil groups (orders) of Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) can be managed on the basis of a one-size-fits-all or location-specific approach is limited by a lack of soil group-based understanding of soil health degradations. We used the relationship between changes in nematode population dynamics relative to food and reproduction (enrichment, EI) and resistance to disturbance (structure, SI) indices to characterize the soil food web (SFW) and soil health conditions of Ferralsol, Lithosol and Nitosol soil groups in Ghana, Kenya and Ma ...More

Interactive effects of salinity and drought stress on photosynthetic characteristics and physiology of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.) seedlings

Atilla DURSUN

Sufficient quantity and quality of water are essential for vegetable production. Evaluating the individual and combined effects of drought and salt stress on plant establishment may help inform management of plant production in terms of stabilizing yield. This study investigates the effects of drought and salt stress on plant growth, nutrition elements, and select physiological parameters of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L. cv. H2274) through a pot experiment under greenhouse conditions. Drought stress was applied to tomato seedlings at 3 different levels of irrigation: D0 (control), D1, an ...More

Isolation, Identification, and Characterization of the Nematophagous Fungus Arthrobotrys oligospora from Kyrgyzstan

Tinatin DOOLOTKELDİEVA | Saykal BOBUŞOVA | Ayperi MURATBEKOVA

Purpose Predatory fungi have been the subject of fundamental studies and their potential as biological control agents against parasitic plant nematodes has been assessed. The aim of the present study was to isolate and identify predatory fungi, performing in vitro and in vivo screening to select highly active strains to control parasitic nematodes. Methods Different nutrient media were used to isolate predatory fungi and determine their morphological and cultural properties. Identification was performed by classical and molecular biology methods. In vitro and in vivo screening was conducted to ...More

Pollen morphology and variability of caprifig (Ficus carica var. caprificus) genetic resources in Turkey using multivariate analysis

Mürüvvet ILGIN

This research was carried out to determine pollen morphological characteristics of caprifig genetic resources known as gene center Anatolia. In this study, pollens from 24 individuals, including 20 caprifig genotypes sampled from the Adana, Hatay, Kahramanmaras, Mersin, and Osmaniye provinces in the eastern Mediterranean region, and four standard cultivars from Aydin in the Aegean region of Turkey were collected. Pollen size and shape, exine thickness, exine tissue, polar and equatorial views, numbers of porates and width, and colpus length and width were measured by using light microscopy (LM ...More

First report of dry rot of potato caused by Fusarium sambucinum in Kyrgyzstan

İsmail ERPER | Sezim COLDOŞBEKOVA

In October 2020, the presence of an intense Fusarium dry rot disease was detected during a survey of potato tubers in the production storage facilities in Chui region, Kyrgyzstan. The species of Fusarium isolates, obtained from infected tubers, were identified as Fusarium sambucinum by using morphological features and phylogenetic analyses of the transcription elongation factor 1-alpha (EF1-alpha) gene. The isolates were pathogenic to potato tubers, and Koch

CHARACTERIZATION OF TEA (CAMELLIA SINENSISL.) GENOTYPES GROWN IN TURKEY BY ISSR MARKERS

Ahmet AYGÜN

The aim of this study was to determine the genetic diversity of 18 tea (Camellia sinensis) genotypes and 6 varieties collected from different provinces in the Black Sea region of Turkey. DNA isolation was performed according to the CTAB method of tea samples. PCR was performed for all DNA samples with 59 ISSR primers. In order to determine the genetic relationship between tea genotypes among these primers, 15 polymorphic ISSR primers were used. At the end of the PCR procedures, the polymorphism rate was determined as 77?rom the bands formed. As a result of the analysis of products obtained by ...More
