Genomic analysis of a functional haloacid-degrading gene of Bacillus megaterium strain BHS1 isolated from Blue Lake (Mavi Golu, Turkey)

Yılmaz KAYA

Purpose: Bacillus megaterium strain BHS1, isolated from an alkaline water sample taken from Mavi Golu (Blue Lake, Turkey), can grow on minimal medium containing 2,2-dichloropropionic acid. We characterized this bacterium at the genomic level. Methods: The HiSeq platform was used to carry out genome sequencing, de novo assembly, and scaffolding with strain BHS1. Next, genome data were analyzed to demarcate DNA regions containing protein-coding genes and determine the function of certain BHS1 genes. Finally, results from a colorimetric chloride ion-release assay demonstrated that strain BHS1 pr ...More

Phosphorous removal from anaerobically digested municipal sludge centrate by an electrocoagulation reactor using metal (Al, Fe and Al-Fe) scrap anodes

Mehmet KOBYA

Phosphates are a major cause of eutrophication and growth of algal blooms in surface waters. The current study investigated phosphorus removal from sludge centrate effluent (SCE) of a municipal wastewater plant by packed-bed electrocoagulation (EC) reactor. Distinctively, iron (Fe), aluminum (Al) and Al-Fe hybrid scrap anodes were used. The influence of initial pHi, applied current and packed anode bed density were evaluated. Phosphorous removal efficiency of 99.99 ?as obtained at applied current of 0.20A with anode bed densities of 0.18 kg Al/m3 (pHi 5.0) and 0.48 kg Fe/m3(pHi 7.0). Optimum o ...More

A case study performed in Kucukcekmece Lagoon channel/Istanbul, Turkey: how the heavy metal contamination and the seasonal variations on phytoplankton composition influence water quality

İbrahim İlker ÖZYİĞİT

In this work, the experiments related to seasonal variations of phytoplankton composition and heavy metal contamination along with some water quality parameters were carried out throughout the channel, serving as a waterway between Lake Kucukcekmece and the Sea of Marmara. Considered as a Class B wetland, the lake has been stayed within the metropolitan area of Istanbul overtime. The samples from the surface water were taken monthly by using Nansen bottles at 5 sampling sites through the period of March-November. After experimental procedures, a total of 46 taxa were recorded belonging to Baci ...More

The first combined archaeological and archaeometric analyses on Bronze Age pottery from Kyrgyzstan (Uch Kurbu site)

Kubatbek TABALDİYEV

The integration of the Bronze Age populations in Kyrgyzstan into the Andronovo sphere is largely based on the resemblance of the ceramic material discovered at the Kyrgyz sites with the pottery from various Andronovo sites, which has been explained by human migrations. However, very few detailed pottery studies have been conducted, and no archaeometric analyses have been applied to date to the material from Kyrgyzstan. We present a first investigation on Bronze Age pottery from Uch Kurbu (Kyrgyzstan) through a combined archaeological (field-based stylistic and macroscopic examinations) and arc ...More

Determination of the Important Toxin Genes of Staphylococcus aureus Isolated from Meat Samples, Food Handlers and Food Processing Surfaces in Turkey

Murat KARAHAN

Staphylococcusaureus is a pathogenic microorganism causing food intoxications and producing many heat-stable toxins. In this study S. aureus prevalence, the presence of enterotoxin genes (sea, seb, sec, sed, see, seg, seh, sej, sei) together with the toxic shock syndrome toxin gene (tsst) were investigated by mPCR. A total of 500 samples were obtained from different animal's meat (sheep, goat, cattle and chicken), hands of staff and surfaces in contact with food. Of 500 samples, 126 (25.2%) were contaminated with S. aureus. One or more staphylococcal enterotoxin (se) gene was determined in 87 ...More

Alternative Bioremediation Agents against Haloacids, Haloacetates and Chlorpyrifos Using Novel Halogen-Degrading Bacterial Isolates from the Hypersaline Lake Tuz

Yılmaz KAYA

The indiscriminate use of chemical pesticides alongside the expansion of large-scale industries globally can critically jeopardize marine ecology and the well-being of mankind. This is because the agricultural runoffs and industrial effluents eventually enter waterways before flowing into highly saline environments i.e., oceans. Herein, the study assessed two novel bacterial isolates,Bacillus subtilisstrain H1 andBacillus thuringiensisstrain H2 from the hypersaline Lake Tuz in Turkey to degrade recalcitrant haloalkanoic acids, haloacetates and chlorpyrifos, and consequently, identify their opt ...More

Urartian Period Rock-Step Water Tunnels in Erzurum and Erzincan II = Erzurum ve Erzincan Çevresindeki Urartu Dönemi Kaya Basamaklı Su Tünelleri II

Nezahat CEYLAN
