The neonatal heart is different from the adult heart in regard to both biochemical and structural features. Echocardiographic studies in human neonatology show that the myocardial function of left ventricle (LV) of premature infants differs from term infants. No study involving myocardial performance index (MPI) in neonatal animals has been performed until now.
